The Mainlander
Bonhomme and South Hanley
St. Louis, Missouri

This 1960s matchbook cover features the famous tiki logo for The Mainlander in St. Louis, MO.  Their logo was based off of a popular tiki fountain made by Witco.  The Mainlander is shrouded in mystery.  No one knows the exact opening date, which was sometime in the early 1960s, and it closed sometime in the late 1970s, most likely 1977.  It became a restaurant named Lautrec’s after closing, and a fire destroyed the building in 1978.  There are now office buildings in its former location.  When the Mainlander was built, it contained the Huki-Lau bar serving “south sea potions”, and was said to be decorated with grass shacks, fountains and bamboo walls inside, and another fountain and white sand beach outside.
