This image comes from a 1960s matchbook cover for the Bali Hai restaurant in San Diego, CA. The Bali Hai was the first of a number of tiki temples that were built on Shelter Island. It opened in 1953, and was originally called “Christian’s Hut” after Christian Fletcher of Mutiny of the Bounty fame. The entire place was heavily tikified, with a few original designs that became their popular mascots. There is the Mr. Bali Hai tiki which greets you at the entrance, as well as the mysterious “Goof” figure located on the peak of the roof. Bali Hai also had a Polynesian floor show in their South Pacific Room. With sweeping views of downtown San Diego, it quickly became quite popular. Bali Hai i still thriving today, and even though some of their tiki style has been lost through renovations, it is slowly returning to its former tiki splendor.
