The Luau

This is the famous tiki logo of The Luau in Beverly Hills, which comes from a 1960s matchbook cover.  The Luau was opened in 1953 by Stephen Crane, replacing the existing Tropics restaurant.  Stephen Crane, most famous for marrying Lana Turner, could also be found here socializing with Hollywood’s elite.  To keep his wealthy guests satisfied, he always made sure that the bar area was filled with high end prostitutes.  He enlisted designer Florian Gabriel to design all of the drink and service ware for the restaurant, and these items have become some of the most sought after by tiki collectors.  This restaurant did so well that Crane was enlisted by Sheraton Hotels to create the Kon Tiki chain to compete with the Hilton’s Trader Vic’s, and opened many across the country.  The Luau was closed in 1978, and was demolished in 1979.
